[Karma Lingpa’s] profound self-liberation of the peaceful and wrathful. The excellent preliminary that purifies the mind.
The parts in grey are not chanted by Rinpoche in the audio, but are present in the original text. The three verses in red seems to differ from what Rinpoche actually chants.
kyema kyihu kalden rikkyi pu / marik timuk wangki manönpar

Is not the time to wallow in idleness. Starting with the reflection on death, you should bring the practice to its completion!

tsela longme chikyen sam mikhyab / tetse mitser dengzhik mathob na
Life has no time to waste, and the possible circumstances of death are beyond imagination. If you still haven’t attained fearless certainty and confidence,

kyepu khyönyi sönpe chizhik rung / chönam dakme tongzhing trötang tral
What was the purpose of your life, amigo senciente? All phenomena are selfless, empty, and free of complexity.

Without abiding and cessation, free from going or coming, free from any references or characteristics, inconceivable and inexpressible.

All beings, tortured by ignorance and karma, in pursuing happiness, only create the karma to suffer.
thapmi khepe dronam nyingre je / nyönmong ledrib takpar chingyi lob
How needing of compassion are all beings, so unskillful [in their actions]. Grant your blessings that I may dispel their
obscurations of afflictive emotions and karma.

dadö zungdzin chingpe tsönra dir / ritak gyarchü laryang jukpa tar
Bound in this prison of self-cherishing and dualistic grasping, like wild animals trapped in a snare, time after time!

tharme lekyi trongkhyer trukpo dir / chikne chiktu zochü khyümo zhin
In this six-dimensional city of imprisoning past actions, circling perpetually on the rim of a whater-wheel

tata nyitu tharwar chingyi lob
Grant your blessing, so that we and the six classes of beings [be liberated].
This English version was refurbished by Padma Dorje in 2023. One of the source translations is anonymous, probably translated by Lama Chokyi Nyima (Richard Barron) or Oliver Boldizar. In the file properties the last person to have edited it was Maíra Rocha, and the author is “tendrel”. The other source is the more recent Gyurme Dorje’s translation of Karma Lingpa’s treasure abbreviatedly entitled Shitro (Peaceful and wrathful, the same text that quaint orientalists with colonialist agendas decided to title The Tibetan Book of the Dead) — the verses excerpted here the first part of the ngondro practice of that cycle, where contemplations on the “four thoughts that turn the mind to the dharma” are traditional. The version here presented is a blend of what I considered the most beautiful and impactful wording between the two translations, and also Chagdud Rinpoche’s rendering of the first half in his own peculiarly precise broken English.1Song of Awakening
Oh, oh, fortunate being now not sleep
Diligent, wake up now
Beginingless to now, then we ignorance in sleep, this enough
Now no more sleep need
Now not sleep and three doors — body, speech, mind — do virtue
Then you remember — birth, sickness, old, die?
This kind suffering, countless and measureless.
You not remember this one?
Then today, certainly, we whole day has, not know.
Today we not die, this certainty not have
Practice diligently — now is the time
Only this times opportunity you now have, long last benefit doing
now time
This opportunity times, you why lazy and why waste?
Now this lazy time, not
You really think, contemplation, impermanent,
Then you do practice and quickly accomplishes
What time death comes, this time you confident,
Death — this O.K. thinks
This times you no regret, then this kinds you accomplish need
This kind confidence has not, then your life what purpose?
All phenomena’s nature, emptiness and selfless
Like water in reflected moon, and waters bubble, and
hallucination, emanations, illusion, mirage, dream, mirror image,
echo... this kind, all illusion ... examples time, similar
All samsara, nirvana...everything this ways
You all recognizing this ways
Nothing stays, nothing goes, nothing comes, nothing really
thinkings objects, signless, saying and thinkings beyond, this kinds
realization then you now this times.

The Dharma of Westworld
Reincarnation, no-self, and other Buddhist lessons from the popular HBO series. Have you been watching the first season of Westworld? Meditation teacher Jay Michaelson writes that the HBO show is "one of the most fascinating ruminations on the dharma" he's seen in American popular culture. // Well... I don't think so... but anyway, here's the link.
A Review of the Madhyamaka Course by Alex Trisoglio
Recently, a student of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, Alex Trisoglio, presented the internet general public with a course on the Madhyamakavatara by Chandrakirti. Here some words on the course, and a particular discussion I had with Mr. Trisoglio.
